Offshore graduation

Attending a graduation outside Australia

As a student studying a UOW degree outside of Australia, you will have an opportunity to attend a UOW graduation ceremony delivered in conjunction with our partner institution you have studied at.

Regardless of whether you are attending your graduation ceremony, every University of Wollongong student who is eligible to complete their course must apply for conferral. Conferral is the process by which your degree is officially awarded. You need to be conferred in order to receive your degree and graduate from the University of Wollongong. At UOW, degrees are conferred prior to the graduation ceremony.

After applying for conferral and having your degree conferred, it is then your choice if you would like to attend a graduation ceremony. If you choose not to attend a graduation ceremony, you will still have formally been awarded your degree.

There are very specific times during the year that you can start the conferral process. Find out information regarding conferral applications and graduation ceremonies in the important dates tab.

To be eligible to graduate at your UOW offshore teaching location you must undertake the following steps:

  1. Complete the academic requirements for your degree
  2. Pay outstanding debts
  3. Apply for conferral
  4. Check your personal details in SOLS are correct
  5. Check your course status has changed in SOLS
  6. Register to attend a graduation ceremony (if you wish to attend a ceremony)

To assist you in graduation process each step is explained below.

Step 1) Complete Academic Requirements

Before you graduate, you need to ensure you complete all of the subjects listed in your course handbook for the year that you started your degree.

In some cases, you may have received academic approval to study different subjects than what is listed in your course hand book.

Step 2) Pay outstanding debts

Prior to graduating, you must ensure you pay all fees owing including course fees and other fees.

Step 3) Apply for conferral

Before you can graduate, you need to apply for conferral.

Conferral is the official process that the University of Wollongong undertakes to check that you have met all of the requirements to be granted your degree. It is also the process by which your degree is officially awarded to you. After you have successfully been conferred, an official Testamur (the legal document issued to you which contains the University seal) is issued by the authority of the Secretary to Council and the Chancellor.

The University of Wollongong has scheduled conferral periods each year. You can view the conferral timelines here.

Step 4)  Check your personal details in SOLS

The name that is published in your UOW SOLS account will be the name that is published on your academic documents.  To avoid paying a fee to correct your personal details, ensure you carefully check the spelling and order of your name.

Any corrections to your formal name should be submitted using the Change to Personal details form, ensuring you include supporting documentation such as a passport or identity card

Step 5) Check your course status has changed in SOLS

You will be able to view whether you have met the requirements for conferral the day after the deadline for results to be declared. Simply log into your UOW SOLS account and check that your course status is ‘Complete.’ If this has not changed, pleased contact the administration team at your institute

You need to be conferred before a scheduled ceremony to be eligible to graduate at that ceremony.

If your conferral application is not approved before your scheduled graduation ceremony, you will not be able to attend that graduation ceremony. If this occurs, you will need to go back to steps 1 of the Preparing to Graduate process or seek academic advice.

If you receive late results, for example, this may mean you will need to attend a graduation ceremony at a later date.

Step 6) Attending a graduation ceremony

If your conferral application is approved, you will receive a notification via your UOW SOLS. In the lead up to the graduation ceremony you will receive an invitation from our partner institution to attend a graduation ceremony.

In conjunction with our partners, the University of Wollongong hold graduation ceremonies at offshore locations. View the date of your offshore graduation ceremony.

If you do not attend a graduation ceremony, contact your Student Services team at the campus where you study and they will advise where you can pick up your documentation.

I felt proud that my friends and family were able to see me graduate and I would encourage others who are interested in pursuing their studies to undertake a UOW degree at SIM.” Mr Hong Ting Quek, Bachelor of Computer Science, UOW Graduate 2019
