Campus: Liverpool
Degree undertaken at UOW: Bachelor of Information Technology
Year commenced: 2020
Why did you choose UOW Liverpool?
When I was in Year 12, I had been enrolled in the University Preparation Program (UPP), getting a hands-on experience at UOW Liverpool every Thursday after school.
After receiving my ATAR of 39.5, I was not able to enroll into any universities of my choice (I expected a lower ATAR as I did not enjoy high school and the stresses at the time). I was offered a Diploma of Information Technology at UOW College. Having experienced the UPP and knowing what UOW is like, I enrolled into the Diploma of Information Technology and completed my first year flawlessly.
Upon completion of the first year of the Diploma of Information Technology at UOW College, I was able to transfer directly into my second year of University studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at UOW Liverpool without any loss of time. I currently hold a Distinction average grade in my degree.
One of the mentors working for the UPP at the time convinced me to enroll into UOW and explained to me of the positions available as a student. In my Second year of University, I applied and was employed as an in2Uni Mentor and I still love it today.
What do you see as the advantages of being able to attend a university close to home?
Whilst studying, I was able to be employed in various job positions throughout the years of my degree. I was able to organise my classes in correlation with my shifts at work without having to travel very far distances. Some days, I would finish Uni and go straight to work, so having the university nearby is an advantage.
Furthermore, as a person that comes from a traditional Lebanese family, moving out wasn’t an option, so having to travel to Uni and back without a very long commute is a great bonus.
Why did you choose your degree?
From a young age, I was always fascinated with technology and how it would change the world. If there were any technical problems at school or home, I was always the one who knew how to fix them. In high school, one of my senior year electives I enrolled in was IPT (Information Processes Technology). During this time, I found myself wanting to study it more at university.
After graduating high school, I attended lots of open days and always found myself gravitating to technology courses and since enrolled into the Bachelor of Information Technology.
Describe what you enjoy the most about being a student at UOW Liverpool.
Before enrolling into UOW, I had researched the top-rated Universities within my location and found that UOW was the right fit for me. I found that UOW is a prestigious University and have been told so by friends from other universities as well.
Some other things I enjoy are how close UOW Liverpool is to my home and the Liverpool city in general (as I always find myself hanging out with friends or shopping after uni) and how flexible my classes are as well.
In three words, please describe your perceptions of UOW Liverpool.
Innovative, Close, Prestigious.
What are your career ambitions?
Whilst studying IPT in high school, I found myself enjoying helping others with tasks and complications in a tutoring session. I helped out many students with assignments and group projects then, so I knew what I wanted to do after graduating.
In university, there were multiple subjects that were difficult for some of my peers yet I understood quite well. I was able to organise a Zoom meeting with a few friends to explain how to do some assignments in which they invited their friends totaling the Zoom meeting participants to about 25 people with me as the “tutor.” This caught the focus of one of my subject coordinators who offered me to work as a Student Helper within some subjects.
Finally, after completing my Bachelor of Information Technology, I am planning to enroll into a Master of Teaching (Secondary) and hopefully will become a High School IT Teacher to help grow the knowledge of the emerging presence of technology.
