Course of study: Traineeship - CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support
Year commenced: 2024
CAREER SATISFACTION
I'm currently undertaking a traineeship at UOW Southern Highlands while working as a carer at Harbison Aged Care. What I like about being a carer is helping the residents with their day-to-day activities. It's a great feeling going home knowing that you've made someone's day 100 times better, and I love helping residents with their day-to-day activities.
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
I chose to undertake this traineeship because I wanted to further educate myself. Eventually, I want to become a registered nurse, so this is a good opening pathway to that.
CAMPUS EXPERIENCE
The UOW Southern Highlands campus is beautiful. As part of my traineeship, I go to the campus one day a week from 9 am to 3 pm, and we do theory and practical skills. The receptionist at the campus is so lovely and there’s complimentary coffee – I do like that!
FINANCIAL INCENTIVES
I wouldn’t have undertaken the traineeship if there was a fee involved. With the economy being so rocky at the moment, the fact this traineeship was local and fee-free was massive. It made my decision to apply 100 times easier.
LOCAL ADVANTAGE
The fact that the traineeship was in the Southern Highlands made my decision to undertake it a lot easier. If the traineeship was in a different region to the Southern Highlands, it would have made my decision to do the traineeship a lot harder due to travel commitments and the long distances involved.
SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS LIFESTYLE
I was born in the Southern Highlands and after living away, I love being back here. The thing I love about the Highlands is the peace and quiet. It’s a small community but everyone’s lovely and there’s no city rush, which is great. For the majority of my childhood, I wanted to be a nurse and one day I’d love to work in this community as a paediatric nurse.
