Meet MBA Director Professor Martin O'Brien as well as graduate Stan Fitzroy-Mendis and MBA candidate Amanda Winks as they visit UOW Sydney CBD campus and talk about their MBA experience.
Master of Business AdministrationHi, my name is Professor Martin O'Brien. I'm the Director of the MBA program at the Sydney Business School University of Wollongong.
The MBA tackles real-world business challenges by having a high-level engagement with industry. So we have industry speakers come in as guest lecturers within our subjects, we have a regular masterclass series where industry leaders are talking to our students about issues that don't even show up in our subjects yet and we have real life businesses come into the classroom and explain their issues and challenges and students work to solve those challenges in real life.
The thing that really makes the course so wonderful is that it's so contemporaneous. You really, really felt like you were learning stuff as it was happening, which is really fantastic.
It's been really wonderful in terms of the way that it integrates with work. That at every step of the journey there's been something happening that's very complimentary to the work that I'm doing so that is amazing.
The MBA for me is building building worth. and I really believe I'm bringing new skills and experience into my business, I was looking for an MBA program that would be very welcoming and approachable I wanted to come to a place where I felt comfortable. I wasn't just a number.
Of all the universities and the city campuses, The Uni of Wollongong, Sydney Business School really was a good fit for me. So definitely if you're interested in something that is really relevant to managers and how they need to apply their knowledge in the modern organisation, then I think the Sydney Business School is probably one of the top programs that we have on offer in the country.

"The MBA constantly reminded me to take a step back and think more wholistically about my organisation, the industry, and how my role contributes. “I use my MBA all the time. I use strategic decision making principles around decisions we make on a daily basis here at Australian Pathology, I use it in my board roles, I use in marketing. I use the things I learned there to test campaigns or press releases or an announcement we want to make. For me it’s been fundamental in giving me more strings in my bow to be able to deliver.”

“The Master of Marketing is a business degree as much as it is a marketing degree. I've gained skills in multiple disciplines, like accounting and financial management, to inform decisions from a marketing perspective. The degree levels you up by teaching on-trend specific technical skills, as well as soft skills such as communication, research and undertaking analysis.
Balancing the roles of mother, professional and student is a challenge, but UOW is beyond supportive. My teachers are leaders in their field that genuinely care about student learning. The course content is pertinent and right on the pulse – I take what I’ve learned in class to the workplace the very next day.”
