The University of Wollongong (UOW) has appointed former La Trobe university Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO as its Interim Vice-Chancellor and President.

Professor John Dewar AO was appointed as the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) Interim Vice-Chancellor and President in June 2024

Professor Dewar is well placed to take up the interim Vice-Chancellor and President role, having served 12 years as the Vice-Chancellor at La Trobe University.

Professor Dewar brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in higher education, having held leadership positions at Griffith University and the University of Melbourne (as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Global Relations) and Provost), before taking up the position of Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University; a position he held from January 2012 to January 2024.

Professor Dewar is an internationally-known family law specialist and researcher. He is a graduate of the University of Oxford, where he was also a Fellow of Hertford College from 1990-1995. He taught at Lancaster University and the University of Warwick in the UK, and worked for the London law firms Allen & Overy and Farrer & Co.

Professor Dewar was Chair of Universities Australia from 2021-3. He is also a partner at KordaMentha in their performance improvement team.

Professor Dewar has a deep understanding of the challenges facing the tertiary education sector. He is pivotal in keeping UOW moving forward and he will be an invaluable addition to UOWs leadership team.
