2024 Indigenous Nationals

The 28th Indigenous Nationals will be held from 23 - 27 June at UOW. The event will be contested in a mixed competition across four sports: touch football, basketball, netball, and volleyball. The annual event will bring together Indigenous student-athletes from universities across Australia to celebrate the rich sporting culture of Indigenous Australia and acknowledge the heritage and history of the participants.

The Indigenous Nationals will take palce at the foot of Djera (also spelt Geira or Geera). Djera is prominent in the local physical and cultural landscape and is central to the Dreaming of the Illawarra.

Djera is usually referenced in relation to her sisters, the Five Islands to her south-east. The fields for this year’s Nationals are named after these islands (Mimosa, Wilga, Lilli Pilli, Wattle, and Clematis) in recognition of the unending connection that Djera shares with her sisters and the enduring relationship of our Traditional Custodians with Country.

The story of the Five Islands also reminds us that we are all connected despite the distance between us, our own Countries or Nations or Universities. We did this to illuminate the bonds we create at these Nationals that will endure even after we return to our homes when the games are finished.
