We officially launched our new look Woolyungah Indigenous Centre on Wednesday 6 March 2019, celebrating the long overdue make-over with our students, community and colleagues.
Our ‘Welcome to WIC’ event commenced with a smoking ceremony that focused on embracing the new space. We showcased and celebrated the dynamic changes of the Centre and were led by local Aboriginal Artists, Aunty Lorraine Brown and Aunty Narelle Thomas to engage in contributing to an ‘Art Collaboration’ piece to feature at the Centre.
Funded jointly through the Student Services & Amenities Fee and Indigenous Student Success Program, the Centre has been designed to support our students to thrive. The Centre is now a culturally safe space featuring bright and engaging decor, collaborative, social and focus areas and a breathtaking courtyard with undercover seating for our students and the wider community. The focal point of the new look Centre is the spectacular custom made fire pit that is surrounded by a purpose built sandstone Yarning Circle. The courtyard is wrapped in beautiful bush medicine plants and features two Illawarra Flame trees.
