27th annual Indigenous Nationals 2023
The 27th annual Indigenous Nationals were held at Monash University in June this year. The Indigenous Nationals is a week-long multisport competition for Indigenous student-athletes. This year 33 universities came together to compete for the crown of overall champion. The opening ceremony began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Elder Aunty Zeta Thomson. We also had the privilege of watching performances by the deadly Bandok Tati and Kee’ahn.
As a staff member who has had the privilege of attending three Indigenous Nationals, I can attest that this year’s event was an amazing experience, filled with celebration, sportsmanship and community. One of the most rewarding aspects of attending the Indigenous Nationals is witnessing the positive impact it has on students. The transformation in our students’ confidence throughout the week was heart-warming and affirmed the importance of the event. The Indigenous Nationals has become more than just a sporting competition, it has become a cherished tradition that reinforces our cultural identity and strengthens our sense of community.
Looking ahead, the excitement continues as it was announced that the University of Wollongong (UOW) will be hosting the Indigenous Nationals in 2024. With UOW’s commitment to inclusivity, respect for diversity and support for Indigenous student excellence, the upcoming event promises to be a momentous occasion that will continue to empower Indigenous students from across the nation.
Shout out to our Indigenous students for their solid effort and representing the university with pride. I am truly grateful to have been a part of this incredible celebration and am honoured to continue contributing to the planning of next year’s event, which I’m sure will be the best nationals yet!
