School staff, Principals and Department of Education partners were brought together for Woolyungah Indigenous Centre’s (WIC) second ‘Schools as Partners Dinner’ on Friday,19 May.
WIC hosts this event to bring together all our school partners to: relish in the accomplishments of our future students; strengthen partnerships; collaborate and reflect on the achievements shared throughout the delivery of WIC’s Outreach activities, including the My Future Matters Program. Through our outreach programs, we work closely with Indigenous High School students with the aim to build their aspirations and increase their awareness of post-school options.
WIC provided a snapshot around the big wins for 2022 and what has been achieved to date in 2023. This included the addition of 13 schools who have engaged in the My Future Matters program (33 in total) and 400 unique students who are actively participating in the program.
During the night our guests engaged in a role-play activity where they were asked to reflect on themselves when they were in Year 7. This activity is run by our staff and Student Ambassador and aims to challenge the participants to think back to their ancestors and to draw / write down what was important to them. They were then asked to think about themselves today and reflect on what was important to them. Following this, our guests shared their answers to further highlight the similarities in values between us and our ancestors.
The night ended with an opportunity for guests to share their highlights for the year so far, which was a great way to end the night.
WIC is excited to continue its relationships with our school partners and is committed to building student’s aspirations in whatever dreams they choose to pursue.
