Saxby Morley, a Wiradjuri man, has just completed an internship at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia with the support of CareerTrackers.
Saxby is in his final year of studying a Master of Computer Science (Machine Learning & Big Data) and has been accepted into the 2025 CommBank Graduate Program. Membership in the program involves fulltime employment, a series of rotations across different business areas, and support in career planning and development.
Saxby was motivated to apply for the internship because the entry level roles in his field were “extremely competitive.” Like most students coming into their final year, Saxby was getting stressed about finding a job after graduation. The internship provided him with “greatly needed professional experience”, an opportunity to explore new applications for his skills, and a competitive edge in the graduate job market.
Saxby recalls that his main role during his internship was in risk management, which “wasn't something that was on my radar initially, but I loved my time there and I'm so glad I was willing to give it a go!” One highlight from his internship was the shock and confusion when he entered the corporate office and realised the friendliness and level of support offered to him. The internship opened other doors, leading to his selection for the graduate program. Saxby says “to be selected for such a competitive (graduate) program has been an amazing feeling. I feel very fortunate to have encountered so many people willing to help me and invested in my success.” He says that approaching CareerTrackers to find an internship was the best decision that he made throughout his time at university. One free opportunity changed the whole trajectory of his career.
His advice for current students is that “you need to know that there are so many people at WIC and CareerTrackers who just want to help you succeed. All you have to do is reach out. My only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner than my final year!”
