Each semester the Indigenous Student Academic Success staff at Woolyungah Indigenous Centre (WIC) organise and run WIC-Ed. It is an empowering experience aimed at enhancing academic preparedness for commencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the University of Wollongong.
The WIC-Ed program incorporates campus tours, sessions on academic writing and public speaking, and opportunities for students to meet with Indigenous academics and a range of UOW staff who will support their academic journey.
WIC-Ed also provides informal opportunities for commencing students to network and build relationships with peers and connect to services and opportunities within WIC more broadly.
In February this year, forty-three commencing students completed the WIC-Ed experience, exploring a range of themes including: defining success, mindset, theory, practical skills, and teamwork.
Feedback from participants in WIC-Ed this year was overwhelmingly positive with students commenting that:
"WIC-Ed has made me more confident and less nervous to start Uni!"
"The WIC staff are amazing at making me feel supported."
"This was great, I have learnt a lot and feel comfortable and confident entering Uni, also feel very supported."
The next WIC-Ed session will be on the 8 July 2024 for students commencing in Spring session.
