Bachelor of Creative Arts, 1997
With a reputation for telling stories that matter with compassion and insight, Kumi Taguchi is among Australia’s most loved and respected names in the international media landscape.
Kumi’s outstanding body of work delves deeply into the human experience. Currently the host of SBS Insight, the Insightful Podcast and guest reporter on SBS Dateline, she brings fresh perspectives to complex, often polarising subjects. Her vibrant personality and unique ability to balance curiosity, emotional vulnerability, and objectivity take her to the heart of each topic, creating a safe space for people to share their experiences and shift national conversations and attitudes.
Fascinated by the stories of others, and drawn particularly to experiences of displacement, Kumi’s approach embodies humanity, perceptiveness, and a profound understanding of the power and importance of storytelling. She covers diverse and challenging issues – from mental health and homelessness to natural disasters and the refugee experience – all with her trademark sensitivity.
Skilfully producing compelling stories and content across multiple platforms, Kumi’s distinguished career spans radio, news and current affairs, documentary, and hosting major televised events including the Sydney Invictus Games and Cultural Commentator for Channel Seven’s Tokyo Olympics. She also spent six years in Hong Kong as an anchor and reporter.
A vocal advocate for diversity of voices in the media, Kumi champions change towards broader representation that better reflects our society, from cultural and socio-economic diversity, to diversity of thought and opinion. A classically trained violinist, she won a scholarship to study music at The University of Wollongong. Currently writing her memoir in Paris, Kumi continues to reflect on her journey, and the stories of others that have shaped her perspective.
It is a privilege to present Kumi Taguchi for the Alumni Award for Arts and Culture.
