Shantelle Thompson OAM

2024 Alumni Award For Social Impact

Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice, 2016

Shantelle Thompson OAM’s journey from adversity to empowerment is nothing short of extraordinary.

Shantelle has worn many hats: mother of six and Aunty to many, world champion athlete, educator, storyteller, truthteller, motivational speaker, social entrepreneur, mentor, role model and social justice advocate. A survivor of racism, violence and abuse, she is a trailblazer in Indigenous trauma recovery and community activism, leading with determination, courage, empathy and strength.

A proud Barkindji/Ngiyampaa woman, Shantelle lifts other First Nations people to connect with culture, build resilience, and achieve intergenerational economic freedom and self- determination. Shantelle founded the Kiilalaana Foundation to deliver innovative programs, including the high-impact Kiilalaana Tiddas (Growing Sisters) empowering First Nations young women through capacity-building, self-leadership, financial literacy and life skills.

Shantelle was awarded an OAM in 2021 for her work in cultural teaching and services to First Nations people.

A three-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion – known as the Barkindji Warrior – and 2019 National NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year, she is also a passionate mentor to young Indigenous and non-Indigenous athletes, inspiring them to strive to become the best they can be and lift those around them as they rise.

It is a privilege to present Shantelle Thompson OAM for the Alumni Award for Social Impact.
