Free tax assistance for the Illawarra and South Coast

The UOW Tax Clinic provides free tax assistance to communities in the Illawarra and South Coast regions.

Assistance is available to eligible individuals and small business who meet the following criteria:

    1. Are unable to access tax assistance due to economic, social or personal factors;
    2. Currently not represented by a tax professional;
    3. Are an Australian citizen or permanent resident; and/or
    4. Are an individual or small business entity.

The UOW Tax Clinic support is provided by UOW students from the School of Business, under the supervision of experienced tax practitioners and UOW academic staff.

The UOW Tax Clinic receives grant funding from the Australian Government as part of the National Tax Clinic program.

Assistance is offered face-to-face and via phone and online.

UOW Tax Clinic assistance

The UOW Tax Clinic may be able to assist you on tax topics including:

  • MyGov and Australian Taxation Office (ATO) online tools;
  • Tax File Number (TFN) registration;
  • tax advice on income and deductions, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Pay as you go (PAYG), Capital Gains Tax, HELP debt and small business tax;
  • tax debt including payment arrangements and hardship requests;
  • tax and superannuation support for international labour mobility workers;
  • Income Tax Return lodgements;
  • Australian Business Number (ABN) and GST registration;
  • Business Activity Statement (BAS) lodgement; and
  • ATO disputes.

Tuesdays: 12:30pm - 4:30pm
Wednesdays: 8:30am - 12:30pm

UOW Tax Clinic will be open weekly on the above days and times from March - June and August - October, 2025.

Bookings are essential.

The UOW Tax Clinic is a student-led education service. It is offered through Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and Internships, giving students the opportunity to gain practical accounting experience and understand the tax profession, alongside the development of their professional, communication, and advocacy skills.

What documents do I need to bring?

  • Identification, previous tax returns, income statements, and any other relevant documents.

Is the service really free?

  • Yes, our services are completely free for eligible individuals and businesses.

What if I cant get there face to face?

  • We offer support via phone and video conferencing. Just complete the “Application for Assistance” form and well get back to you to organise a time to chat.
