General Positions

Most general positions are employed by the various research groups directly. The school periodically employs casuals to assist in open days. These positions are filled directly by rewarding outstanding casual academic performance and/or high quality ecte457 or ecte250/350 projects.

If you have been granted a position then you must obtain from the supervisor of the position a UOW General Staff Casual Authority form. This form needs to be filled in and returned to the Laboratory Manager together with a copy of your passport. If this is your first employment opportunity at the university then it is also recommended that you complete the Tax File Number Declaration Form. If you are an international student you must also supply a copy of your visa showing that you are entitled to work in Australia.

Once all the necessary paperwork has been received by the Laboratory Manager, it must be approved and sent to Personnel Services to be processed. Please allow at least two weeks for this process to be completed. When your application has been processed you will be given back the Casual Authority form showing your employee and job number. At this stage you can begin claiming your hours worked.

The application form lists all the subjects that are being taught during the session. Not all subjects listed will require any casuals at all. The more you are capable of the more options available to provide you with a position.

Begin by looking at each subject and identify the subjects that you have the appropriate skills to teach in. Background information on each subject is available on the web. You must only apply for subjects that you have the ability to teach. For each subject you have three options:

  • Demonstrate: This is to demonstrate in a laboratory. You will be guiding a class full of students through a variety of experiments in the subject. You must know how to do the experiments and be able to explain to the students any background information required.
  • Tutor: This is to run a tutorial or seminar. You will be directly teaching a class full of students. The most common scenario is the students work through a number of problems and then you must go through the answers. You must have the ability to explain problem solving to an entire class. You must have first completed a certificate in ‘Running Tutorials in SECTE’.
  • Marking: This involves marking laboratory notebooks, reports and tutorial questions. Marking usually requires many hours of work in a very limited amount of time. All reports must be marked within two weeks of being handed to you.

The application form also contains a number of checklist items that you must agree to for your application to be accepted:

  • You accept to prepare: To ensure a satisfactory experience for your students you are expected to prepare for the subjects you will be undertaking. As an example you must understand how to undertake the experiment yourself before you can guide a class full of students.
  • You must be available to work for the entire session.
  • You confirm you have the appropriate skills.
  • You must attend a paid university induction session within the first year of employment.

SECTE runs two different induction programs for new casuals wishing to undertake casual academic positions within the school. They are:

  1. Demonstrating & Marking in SECTE: This comprises of an induction session, online training program and quiz as well as assisting an experienced demonstrator. As a result your first subject that you are employed in might be a subject that is not in your skilled area.
  2. Running Tutorials in SECTE: You may apply to undertake this induction after you have completed an entire session of Demonstrating. This comprises of an induction session, quiz and assisting an experienced tutor. If you would like to nominate then you must book an interview with the Laboratory Manager.

Please be aware that at the end of the induction your performance as a demonstrator/tutor will be marked. You must receive at least a Pass in all categories for you to complete your training and obtain certification. If you do fail you can apply again during the next session.

Induction certificates are issued upon successful completion of the training program.

The application form for SECTE Demonstrating Certification requires you to self assess your skills. It is important to show in the score you give yourself which areas are your strengths and which areas are your weaknesses.

When all applications are reviewed, those that are successful will be called for an interview. The interview will simulate a real demonstrating environment. The positions are competitive and a mix of casuals in the electrical, computer and telecommunications strengths are selected.
