Mahler’s 2nd Symphony plays on a record, accompanied by the collected ramblings of late night talkback radio. These 2 elements are the raw material for a performance. They run along together in a composition of bodies, voices, colour and movement.
Performed with passion by a motley crew of semi-professionals, Dust Between the Floorboards melds grand spectacle with amateur mediocrity in an attempt to find some kind of alchemy, for your entertainment.
Dust Between the Floorboards is the culmination of a process led by director Matt Prest, working with 2nd Year Bachelor of Creative Arts (Performance) students. A devising process that has been open-ended, intuitive and physical, and has aimed to give creative agency to the students as makers as well as performers.
MATT PREST works across theatre, performance and live art, making both solo and collaborative work, as a performer, director and devisor. He holds a BFA in Sculpture, Performance and Installation, from COFA, UNSW and has trained at Ecole Philippe Gaulier, Paris. Matt has been a lead artist in the cross-disciplinary performance works: The Tent (2008 - 2010); Hole in the Wall with Clare Britton (2010); Whelping Box with Branch Nebula and Clare Britton (2012-14); Running Up A Skyscraper ( 2015); and The Queen St Run (2016). His work has been presented at ArtsHouse, Next Wave Festival, Performance Space, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Darwin Festival, PICA, Site is Set Festival, APAM and Rapid Pulse Performance Art Festival, Chicago. His work has been recognised with a Helpmann Award for Best Visual or Physical Theatre (2014), Green Room Awards for Best Production Design (2010) and Best Contemporary Performance (2014), and a Creative Australia Fellowship from the Australia Council (2012). He was artist-in-residence at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in New York, 2016 and is Assistant Producer for contemporary performance and dance at Campbelltown Arts Centre.
