This workshop, presented by My Life My Decisions Inc in partnership with UOW, will offer research-based strategies which autistic and neurodivergent individuals, their families, educators and service providers can use to support autistic individuals to develop and utilise self-determination in different stages of their lives.

Self-determination is an important aspect of development as it involves the individual’s ability to act on their own behalf without pressure or interference from others. People who have higher self-determination exhibit self-awareness and are able to use skills such as goal setting, decision making, self-management, problem solving, and self-advocacy, all skills that are important in developing independence and achieving in different areas of life.
This workshop will consist of three sessions:
- Session 1: What is Self-determination and why does it matter
- Session 2: Facilitating self-determination of autistic and neurodivergent individuals in a neurotypical world
- Session 3: Creating opportunities and employing strategies to support self-determination and agency (3 breakout sessions for different groups)
- Breakout session A– Strategies for educators/service providers/professionals
- Breakout session B -Strategies for parents, carers and families
- Breakout session C – Strategies for autistic/neurodivergent adolescents and adults
This workshop is for:
- Autistic and neurodivergent adolescents and adults
- Parents/carers of autistic and neurodivergent children
- Educators, service providers and other professionals working with autistic and neurodivergent people of all ages
