Maggots of greenbottle blowfly Lucilia sericata

Environmental Futures Seminar - Dr Frank Stadler

Maggot therapy is the use of living fly larvae of the greenbottle blowfly Lucilia sericata and other blowfly species to treat chronic wounds. Applied to the wound, medicinal maggots consume dead tissue, control infection, and promote wound healing.

How come that a group of universally reviled creatures such as blowflies should have such potent medicinal properties? To answer this question, Dr Stadler will explore the natural and clinical history of blowflies and maggot therapy and outline the therapeutic principles underpinning the therapy. He will conclude the seminar with the latest cutting-edge developments in maggot-based therapeutics development.
