Environmental Futures Seminar – Associate Professor Sarah Hamylton and Dr Kim Williams

Wollongong is one of many global cities on the sea facing rapid environmental and social change. The sea is ever-present in the lives of the people who live on this long coastal strip, bounded by the escarpment and the Pacific Ocean. The geographic footprint of the City+Sea artwork and video extends from Otford in the north to Bass Point in the south. City + Sea invites the members of the Environmental Futures Research Institute and SEALS coastal scientists to reflect on their relationships with this place. We offer you an unfamiliar perspective of the city from the sea: a continuous video of the coastline filmed from a fishing boat over three hours and forty minutes, and a corresponding 26-metre-long watercolour drawing. This is a space for people to come together, to slow down, to yarn, to write, to draw, to create, and to share stories of this place.

In this session, we will introduce you to the show, then Dr Kim Williams (visual artist) and Associate Professor Sarah Hamylton will talk about their experiences of putting on the show, offer general reflections about art-science collaborations and our 10-year long experience of working together in an interdisciplinary group. We will then devote some time to looking at the artwork / video and provide some examples of responses to the video, before we wrap up by inviting attendees to respond to the video, either in the remainder of our time there, or at their own convenience.
