Investment firm calling all potential maths gurus
The next crop of potential investment gurus had the opportunity to learn about future careers from industry leaders when Tibra Capital visited UOW this week.
Tibra Capital has a strong connection to UOW: founding owner and Global Managing Director Tim Berry graduated with a Bachelor of Mathematics and Finance from UOW.
Five Tibra Capital staff presented the career options available at their company to 37 eager undergraduate students, who brought their CVs along. Many of their top-performing employees are UOW graduates and they want more.
They are particularly interested in talking to students studying mathematics, computer science, physics, and various types of engineering including electrical and mechatronics engineering.
The company specialises in equities trading, arbitrage, and market making, operating in key electronic markets globally. Every year Tibra Capital invests over $110,000 in scholarships and prizes for UOW undergraduates.
Professor Jacqui Ramagge from the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics said many UOW graduates were valued staff at Tibra and when vacancies arise they look for talent among the students who are about to graduate.
“For those students who were at an earlier stage in their studies this was an opportunity to find out what Tibra do, meet their staff and find out what they would be doing for the 10-week summer internship if they were successful in obtaining a Tibra Capital Work-Integrated Learning Scholarship,” Professor Ramagge said.
Tibra Capital Head of the Medium Frequency and Fundamentals Trading teams Chris Udy said during an earlier visit to UOW: “The collaboration between UOW and Tibra is a relationship that we value highly, offering us access to excellent graduates and an opportunity to promote excellence in the Mathematical Sciences, Computer Science, Physics and Engineering disciplines. The partnership is a leading example of how academic and industry can work together.”
