Leading medico takes the reins as Dean of Medicine at UOW
Respected medical educator Professor Ian Wilson has been appointed as the new Dean of Medicine at the University of Wollongong (UOW).
In a career spanning more than 30 years, Professor Wilson, has practised medicine in in the armed services and at inner city, rural and suburban practices, spent time a medical educator both at universities and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and has contributed original research to the fields of mental health care and medical education.
He joined UOW’s Graduate School of Medicine in 2012 and is currently the Associate Dean Learning and Teaching.
Commenting on the new appointment, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health at UOW, Professor Alison Jones, said:
“Ian has a wealth of experience in medical education. His dedication to UOW since he joined the Graduate School of Medicine two years ago has been exceptional.”
Professor Wilson, who has a keen research interest in student development, said he is looking forward to developing the medical curriculum so that students get the most out of their education.
“This is a great challenge and an exciting position,” Professor Wilson said.
“Combining the Graduate School of Medicine with exercise and medical sciences, nutrition and dietetics and Indigenous health has produced an exciting blend of students, education and research. Working with the staff and students of the School of Medicine will be very rewarding.”
