UOW sportsmanship rewarded at Eastern Uni Games
UOW has taken out the Spirit of the Games award for the second year in a row at the Eastern University Games this week.
Around 3,000 university and TAFE students from across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory competed in 17 different sports at the 2014 Eastern University Games, hosted by Newcastle.
The result was announced at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium last night (10 July) in front of a 150 strong crowd, which included dignitaries, following four days of sporting competition.
Jaime Hart from the UOW University Recreation and Aquatic Centre, who coordinates the UOW team, said the Spirit of the Games award recognises positive attitude, participation, team cohesiveness and sportsmanship on and off the field.
“It is voted on by referees and the competition managers and is the only title awarded in addition to the champions trophies. It is certainly a wonderful achievement for our students.”
UOW also took out gold in the Men’s Oztag (for the second year in a row) and Women’s Volleyball, bronze in Men’s Hockey and Men’s Football and fourth place in Women’s Football and Men’s Volleyball.
UOW placed 5th in the overall competition (out of 18 competing Universities and Colleges).
The winning UOW teams will compete in the Australian University Games in Sydney from 28 September – 3 October.
