Hundreds of students poised to go Goodwill Hunting

It can be a very expensive exercise for cash-strapped university students moving out of home for the first time and trying to set up new accommodation.

Students will now have a chance to help set up their new place with free kitchenware, furniture, linen and lots more courtesy of the generosity of UOW staff and the community.

It’s called Goodwill Hunting and event organisers Heidi De Coster and Kay Kent (pictured above) said a record amount of goods has been donated for the good cause.

“There will be a treasure trove of offerings available for students in the University Hall for the two-day event running tomorrow (Friday 27 February from noon to 6pm) and on Saturday from 10am to 2pm,” they said.

Students must bring along their student ID card and are urged to get in early. Bags will be available to help them load up on the essential items they need. Volunteers even help deliver the larger items on offer to the students’ residences.

“When students are starting off they have enough out of pocket expenses paying for their fares, books and general fees so Goodwill Hunting is a respite from all the costs they face,” Heidi and Kay said.

Goodwill Hunting began several years ago and is now a fixture on the Orientation Week calendar for students.

Note to media: Photos and filming can include the queue of students lining up before the University Hall doors open at noon tomorrow (Friday 27 February) and then images inside the hall as students survey the smorgasbord of free goods on offer.
