Research collaboration with leading Chinese university strengthened
UOW and Beihang University (BUAA) signed a student exchange agreement, further strengthening a well-established partnership between the two institutions.
BUAA President Professor Jinpeng Huai headed a senior delegation of four to UOW on 24 February, 2015, to meet Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, Professor Joe Chicharo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy), and Professor Judy Raper, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation).
“The partnership between BUAA and UOW has been built up steadily in recent years. Beihang University is now a strategic international partner of UOW,” Professor Wellings said.
Following the , BUAA and UOW will now create exciting new opportunities for high-achieving undergraduate students.
“This new student exchange arrangement will allow students from BUAA and UOW to spend a semester or a year abroad, enriching the international experience of their degree,” Professor Wellings said.
Currently, BUAA offers seven undergraduate programs in English, including International Economics, Electronic Information Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Flight Vehicle Design and Engineering, Automation, Civil Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.
The new student exchange agreement will also give UOW students the chance to join in a team of BUAA students in an annual scientific and technology competition held each year in April.
During the meeting, the two universities reviewed existing research collaborations in the area of Material Science and Engineering, including a joint research project under the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Project and a joint Chinese Academy of Science 111 project. As a result of their collaborations, the two institutions have also jointly produced nearly 30 joint publications and four symposiums and have facilitated six staff exchanges.
“The Joint Research Centre has set a good example of how two leading research universities can work together and produce excellent achievements,” President Huai said.
Other BUAA delegation members included: Professor Lin Guo, Deputy Dean of School of Chemistry and Environment; Ms Ying Lv, Deputy Director of the International Office; and Professor Lei Jian, Dean of School of Chemistry and Environment, a world-renowned scientist in interfacial materials and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was appointed as an Honorary Professor of UOW in 2012.
Other UOW attendees included Professor Tim Marchant, Professor Chris Cook, Associate Professor Katina Michael, Professor Shixue Dou, Professor Huakun Liu, Professor Huijun Li, Professor Yi Mu, Dr Yue Zhao, Dr Yi Du, Dr Bill Damachis, and Ms Jessica Sun.

About BUAA and UOW
The partnership between BUAA and UOW was established in 2009 with a PhD scholarship program jointly sponsored by UOW and the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). The collaboration developed quickly to involve several schools and research centres, including the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM), the School of Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronics Engineering, School of Computer Science and Software Engineering from UOW and the School of Chemistry and Environment, the School of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, and the School of Computer Science from BUAA.
