Public lecture deals with burden of cancer 

Leading cancer and palliative care researcher Professor David Currow will deliver a free public lecture this Friday 25 November, looking at ways to lessen the burden of cancer across our community.

Professor Currow, the Chief Cancer Officer in NSW and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, will deliver the 2016 Alan Owen Lecture, hosted by UOW’s Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI).

The annual lecture is named in honour of the late Professor Alan Owen (1952 – 2012), who campaigned for better health care and outcomes for patients.

Professor Currow’s talk - ‘Lessening the burden on cancer across the community’ - will focus on how cancer outcomes can continue to improve as a direct result of the investment that is being made today to drive models of care that better address the ongoing complexity of cancer.

Professor Currow believes the most effective way to lessen the impact of cancer across the community is to have a whole-of-system response, including reducing smoking rates and increasing the number of cancers covered under national screening programs. 

Professor Currow previously held the roles of President of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia and President of Palliative Care Australia and, through his roles, has a particular emphasis on chronic breathlessness and improving health service delivery in palliative and supportive care.

He currently leads a number of initiatives through the Cancer Institute NSW team including cancer prevention, screening for early detection, systems development and funding for research infrastructure.
