New Social Sciences Executive Dean commences
A senior figure in the public health sector in Australia, Professor Glenn Salkeld, commences at UOW.
A senior figure in the public health sector in Australia, Professor Glenn Salkeld, has started his new role as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UOW.
Professor Salkeld has more than 25 years’ experience in public health research and education.
Most recently, he held the position of Professor of Public Health and Head of the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, one of Australia’s largest public health schools with more than 1,200 postgraduate students and the highest rating for research excellence in Australia.
UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, said Professor Salkeld has an impressive research record, particularly in the areas of health decision analysis, citizen preferences and translational health.
He has been a member of the Economic Subcommittee of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, a consultant to the World Health Organisation on the Essential Medicines Program, a Member of the NHMRC Public Health Panel, a Member of the Bowel Cancer Implementation Committee and a Director of the Board of the Sax Institute.
Professor Salkeld has also been involved in teaching in the discipline of health economics at the national and international level.
In 2013, his School of Public Health trialled a new initiative called ‘classroom in the field’. The principle involved postgraduate students taking what they learned in the classroom based in Sydney and apply it in a cross-cultural learning context. The first placements occurred in Timor Leste, Vietnam and the Philippines.
The highly cited author will be taking over from the foundation Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, John Steele, who announced his retirement last year.
