UOW Library farewells magazine legend Richard Neville

Richard Neville passes away age 74

It is with great sadness the University of Wollongong Library acknowledges the passing of renowned Australian author and social commentator Richard Neville, age 74, who rose to fame as a co-founding editor of the iconic counterculture OZ magazine during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Oz magazine was a satirical publication renowned for pushing boundaries and sparking censorship wars, and resulted in the arrest of Richard, alongside his various editing colleagues, on more than one occasion. In recent years UOW Library has had the pleasure of working closely with Richard and his wife Julie on the digital availability of Oz Sydney and Oz London, which are now fully available online to read, research and study online.

"Oz Sydney provides unique insight into what was happening in our corner of the world at this time and, although seen as highly controversial, was an important barometer of the changing social and political landscape," UOW Library Associate Director, Collections & Scholarly Communications, Rebecca Daly said.

"Richard was very passionate about Oz and was thrilled to work with us to preserve these publications and make them readily available for current and future generations."
