Elton fever takes over Wollongong

UOW staff among 20,000-strong crowd.

Thirty lucky University of Wollongong staff members joined the 20,000-strong crowd struck by Elton fever at WIN Entertainment Centre last night (Sunday 24 September). The Rocket Man didn’t disappoint, delivering a high-energy performance complete with elaborate sound, lighting and video and show-casing Wollongong as a premier entertainment venue for world-class acts.

Staff who won tickets appreciated the opportunity to attend care of the University and were thrilled to see such a musical icon on home soil. Over his career Sir Elton has played more than 4,000 concerts in over 80 countries and Sunday night was his first time in Wollongong.

University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, arranged the ticket give-away in recognition of the hard work done by all staff in reaching significant milestones for the University over the last 12 months.

The double passes were distributed following an ‘Elton John live’ competition, which attracted around 1,100 entries from Elton John fans eager to gain admission to the much-anticipated show.

While displaying a touch of ‘Elton John style', Vice-Chancellor Wellings drew the winners randomly and announced them at a celebration morning tea event on the University’s picturesque McKinnon Lawn.

The winners came from faculties and divisions across the University and included staff based at the Wollongong, Innovation and Shoalhaven campuses.

The competition was open to all UOW staff. Entries were submitted online, with each staff member permitted to enter only once.
