Royal launch for UOW’s global leaders degree
High achieving students shown potential of ground breaking honours program.
His Royal Highness, The Duke of York, visited the University of Wollongong today (Tuesday, September 26, 2017) to formally launch the University’s Global Leaders Education and Development (GoLEaD) Program – a new and unique talented students opportunity.
The Duke met over 100 high-achieving Higher School Certificate students from across the Illawarra region at the launch.
Targeting students who score among the top five percent in the HSC, the GoLEaD program will provide direct entry into a coveted Honours degree, facilitate up to 18 months of study at the UOW’s Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong campuses and provide generous paid internships with global organisations.
GoLEaD program participants will receive dedicated academic mentoring along with scholarship and internship packages valued at more than $17,000 per annum, making it one of the most financially attractive talented students programs in NSW.
Tuesday’s launch by the Duke of York was attended by over 100 HSC students who are predicted to score among the top five percent of students in Australia in this year’s HSC, their parents and school principals.
University of Wollongong Vie-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings CBE, said the University was honoured to be welcoming the Duke of York to its campus for this important event.
“We are delighted that the program is being launched by HRH The Duke of York – a global leader himself – who will be at the University on Tuesday to host the Bootcamp for his pitch@palace program – a global program designed to accelerate start-ups of entrepreneurs across the globe,” Professor Wellings said.
The GoLEaD program is the brainchild of UOW Deputy Vice Chancellor (Global Strategy) Professor Alex Frino, who said: “We are offering a globally unique undergraduate students program which will assist candidates with leadership potential to develop one of the most important leadership abilities of all – a global mindset.
“Prospective students and their parents will be able to meet the Prince over a cup of tea and hear more about the program,” Professor Frino said.
The GoLEaD program will offer students a unique immersive education and cultural experience in three different cultural settings in the Middle East, Asia and China.
Professor Frino said: “The University of Wollongong is a unique university in that it has large campuses in three important business, finance and logistics capitals in the world – Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong. We are going to use these campuses to deliver a unique experience for undergraduate students at the University of Wollongong.
“Our research on talented students programs offered by universities in NSW has uncovered more than 30 such programs offered by seven universities. The GoLEaD program is the only one to offer up to 18 months of overseas study experience, and direct entry into Honours.
Furthermore, at more than $17,000 per annum the financial package of the GoLEaD program places it in the top five offered by NSW universities.”
While initially targeting Business and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) students, UOW has plans to expand the GOLEaD program to other discipline areas.
The first intake will be up to 30 students.
