The University of Wollongong (UOW) welcomes the appointment today of UOW Alumnus Mr Gareth Ward MP as the NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Education in addition to his current roles as Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast and Member for Kiama.
Mr Ward has had a long association with UOW as a student, student representative and Council member.
UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, welcomed the announcement of Mr Ward’s appointment.
“We are looking forward to working closely with Gareth in his new role as Parliamentary Secretary for Education,” Professor Wellings said.
“Gareth’s commitment to higher education combined with the tenacity he has shown while tackling key issues for the Illawarra and South Coast region prepares him well to make a significant contribution to the education sector in NSW.”
Mr Ward completed two undergraduate degrees at UOW, graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce. He was heavily involved as a student representative during his studies, serving on the Wollongong University Student Association and as a student representative on the UniCentre board. Mr Ward also played an instrumental role in reviving the UOW Liberal Club.
Following his graduation, Mr Ward served as a member of the University Council from 2010 to 2014.
