VC’s vision for higher education features in The CEO Magazine
High-profile international magazine traces the course of Professor Wellings’ career in research and education.
In an interview with The CEO Magazine, Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE explains how he arrived at the University of Wollongong (UOW) with a vision to expand its international footprint and invest in new research infrastructure that will put the University in a key position in molecular science.
Now in his second term at the helm of UOW, Professor Wellings is one of Australia’s longest-serving Vice-Chancellors having spent a decade at the University of Lancaster in the UK before taking up his current role at Wollongong.
Longevity in the sector has given Professor Wellings a vantage point from which to observe changes in higher education, from driving more industry engagement to the more recent debates around policy and funding.
“I hadn’t ever expected this, but we seem to have attracted a lot of attention from the media in recent times due to people tinkering with policy; the government has been modifying things for 25 years,” Professor Wellings told The CEO Magazine.
“I want universities off the front page of newspapers, and for all of us to have a little more certainty about what Australia wants of its university sector.”
