Community invited to comment on University building project plans.
Plans for the University of Wollongong’s Western Building have been released for public exhibition today (Thursday 16 November).
The planned four storey Western Building will be a landmark development for the Wollongong campus, located adjacent to the campus Ring Road at the western end of the campus and accommodating the School of The Arts English and Media (TAEM) in the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts and the School of Health and Society (HAS) and the School of Geography and Sustainable Communities (SGSC) from the Faculty of Social Science.
The building’s 10,000sqm of floor space will provide state-of-the-art facilities including student performance theatres and rehearsal spaces along with film, media arts, digital design and music studios. It will also contain office space for academic and professional staff, specialist simulation and work health and safety laboratories and spaces for informal collaboration and support services.
The plans will be on public exhibition from Thursday 16 November to Friday 15 December 2017 and can be viewed on the NSW Government’s Major Projects website.
The exhibition documents will include architectural plans, landscape plans the environmental impact statement and supporting environmental studies.
Community members are welcome to comment on any aspect of the project. All submissions will be posted to the major projects website prior to a consolidated response being issued by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.
UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, said the project forms an important part of the University’s Campus Master Plan.
“The new Western Building will provide students, researchers and University staff with state-of-the-art, world class facilities and aligns with our desire to meet the broader needs and vision of our student body.
“This project is an important step in bringing the Campus Master Plan to life. Along with Molecular Horizons, our Molecular and Life Sciences building, it paves the way for new heights of excellence across life sciences, social sciences, law, humanities and the arts,” Professor Wellings said.
Expressions of interest were recently released for the construction of two major building projects on the Wollongong campus; the Western Building and the Molecular Horizon Building.
