Students work with government, business on solving real-world problems

Global Scope initiative provides international students with valuable employment skills

A new program that pairs international students with mentors in the corporate world was launched at the University of Wollongong (UOW) on Monday, June 25.

Fifty postgraduate students from UOW, from the fields of engineering and business, are taking part in Global Scope, an initiative of StudyNSW and Sydney-based start-up Intersective in collaboration with UOW Careers Central.

With the support of consulting mentors, the students will work across different business projects during a period of three weeks with the aim of delivering solutions to real-world problems experienced by clients.

Some of the organisations that are taking part in Global Scope include the Public Works Advisory and NSW Police.

Ms Nuala O’Donnell, Director of Graduate Career Development and Employability at UOW, said the work-integrated learning program enabled students to gain valuable experience in the fields of business and government, and provided a real insight into life after university.

“Global Scope helps to bridge the divide between university study and entering the working world, ensuring students have all the skills they need to hit the ground running once they finish their studies,” Ms O’Donnell said.

“This kind of experience enhances the UOW students’ employability and can make a significant impact to employers when these students enter the job market. We are committed to creating career-ready graduates who are making an impact on the world around them.”

The students are working on business solutions for clients in the world of business, NSW government departments, and non-government organisations.
