UOW shines in annual ranking of world's top young universities

QS Top 50 Under 50 captures excellence in research, teaching

The University of Wollongong (UOW) has maintained its outstanding performance in the 2019 QS Top 50 Under 50 rankings, taking out 16th position.

In the annual results, released overnight (Thursday 21 June), UOW rose one spot from last year’s placement of 17th, showing why the University continues to be one of the top emerging universities in the world.

The QS Top 50 Under 50 emphasises the potential and excellence of the world’s young universities, those without decades or centuries of established reputation, and identifies which of them might disrupt the global elite.

Now in its sixth year, the QS Top 50 Under 50 ranks the best universities that are under 50 years old.

The rankings are based on an institutional capacity in both research and learning and teaching, with the four key indicators of academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, and citations per faculty.

The University’s strong position comes on the back of its , announced earlier this month, in which UOW climbed 14 places to number 218 in the world.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE said he was proud that UOW was once again named among the best young universities in the world, a reflection of its growing strength in the fields of research, and learning and teaching.

“We have a deep commitment to providing our students with a personalised experience and quality education that will give them the foundation upon which to build an exciting, fulfilling career,” Professor Wellings said. “At the same time, our reputation as a world-class research-intensive university continues to grow.

“We are proud of our place as one of the top emerging universities in the world. We are young, dynamic and determined to continue making an impact through our excellence in purpose-driven research and a positive student experience.

“Although each international ranking assesses universities differently, we are seeing a consistent trend of strong performances, and these positive results reflect the continued drive for excellence from UOW staff members.”
