UOW surges in prestigious global subject rankings
Engineering a standout in annual QS World University Rankings By Subject
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has strengthened its position on the global stage with the release of the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject.
Since 2011, the annual QS World University Rankings by Subject assess and rank the world’s top universities based on their academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact, across 48 subjects, grouped into five broad subject areas.
Released Thursday (March 1 AEDT), the 2018 data show a strong improvement for UOW across the range of disciplines assessed, with the University achieving a rise in rankings in four of the five broad subject areas.
The broad subject areas are Engineering and Technology, Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Management, and Life Sciences and Medicine.
Engineering continues to be the top performer with the University ranked 24th in the world in the subject of Mineral and Mining Engineering, a boost of two positions from last year.
In the subject area of Engineering and Technology, UOW rose 16 places to 169th in the world, and demonstrated considerable gains in Social Sciences and Management – up 35 places to 194 - and Natural Sciences – up 38 places to 257.
UOW achieved a spot in the top 150 universities in the world for the subjects of Civil and Structural Engineering, Materials Science, and Education.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings CBE said the University’s robust performance reflected its reputation for excellence in learning and teaching, and commitment to outstanding research outcomes.
“This is a fantastic result. We are seeing a consistent trend of UOW improves its performance across the world rankings, in an environment that is becoming increasingly competitive,” Professor Wellings said.
“We are proud of being in the top 25 universities in the world for Mineral and Mining Engineering. Results like these not only reinforce our standing in fields which are our traditional strengths, such as Engineering, but also highlight the positive progress we are making in other fields.
“These results are a testament to the exceptional work being undertaken by our outstanding staff at UOW. This is an important step as we continue our quest to reach the top one per cent of universities worldwide.”
The results come on the back of UOW’s outstanding performance in last year’s graduate employability outcomes.
The QS Graduate Employability Rankings, released in September 2017, ranked UOW among the top 200 universities in the world for graduate employment rates and partnerships with employers.
UOW also topped the 2018 Good Universities Guide in student experience, achieving a five-star sweep of all student experience categories.
