UOW receives funding from Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge
Funds to further strengthen medical research in the Illawarra region
The University of Wollongong (UOW) accepted a $50,000 donation on Monday 1 March 2021 as part of the Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge (MTMC). The funds will be used by UOW's medical research institute Molecular Horizons to address various health issues in the Illawarra region.
Every year, MTMC raises money to support medical research and address health-related issues that need immediate attention in the region.
The Molecular Horizons at UOW is a dedicated research facility that comprises world-leading researchers and technology to address the world's biggest health challenges.
Tynan Motors Group Director Madeline Tynan said the Tynan family is committed to supporting medical research in the Illawarra region and would continue to help the region through UOW's health and medical facilities.
"As a family, we are passionate about giving back to the Illawarra community as our business grows in the region," Ms Tynan said.
"We are delighted to support the development taking place in the medical research facilities at UOW, especially in areas such as mental health, which has recently touched so many families in the Illawarra and the staff at Tynan Motors too.
"I would like to thank everyone in the community who has supported our charity events over the past five years."
Molecular Horizons Director Professor Antoine van Oijen thanked the Tynan family for their ongoing support and said the funds will be utilised to support research students in the form of scholarships and other research projects currently undertaken in the region.
"We are grateful to the Tynan family for their support of the research that we do, and particularly their support of training and development of young researchers and allowing them the opportunity to upskill and prepare for their careers," Professor van Oijen said.
"This year, we have a focus on utilising the funds on neurosciences, molecular psychiatry and other molecular life sciences research areas that relate to mental health," Professor van Oijen said.
The research facility is a major strategic initiative by the University with an integrated focus on research and training with regional partners such as the Local Health District and other health partners in the Illawarra region.
