Kangaroo, emu and vegemite on the menu at welcome event for international students
Welcome to Wollongong showcases cultural performances, community connections, campus facilities
The University of Wollongong (UOW) will host a ‘Welcome to Wollongong’ event for newly commencing international students on Wednesday 9 August at the Student Lounge in Building 11.
The event provides a warm and friendly way for international students to connect with the University, the city, and its diverse community.
UOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic and Student Life) Professor Theo Farrell will host the event, while Wollongong City Councillor David Brown will greet the students on behalf of the City of Wollongong, emphasising the city’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for international scholars.
Students will also experience a warm welcome by the Indigenous community members, who will grace the occasion with an interactive cultural dance performance, celebrating the rich heritage and diversity of the region.
The event will showcase a plethora of stallholders representing various UOW support services, cultural clubs, societies, and community organisations. UOW support services, such as Wellbeing, Pulse, and UniActive, will be on hand to provide information and guidance. Cultural clubs and societies will offer insights into the vibrant campus culture.
Community stallholders, including the Council, Destination Wollongong, and Illawarra Multicultural Services, will offer students valuable insights into local resources and opportunities.
Attendees will have the opportunity to indulge in an authentic Australian BBQ experience, featuring unique culinary delights like emu and kangaroo sausages, as well as traditional treats like vegemite sandwiches and fairy bread.
Professor Theo Farrell said the event will give students the opportunity to experience the social side of campus life, meet the community and make connections.
“We are delighted to extend a warm invitation to our newly arriving international students through the Welcome to Wollongong event,” Professor Farrell said.
“This event symbolises our commitment to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where students can thrive academically and personally.
“The Welcome to Wollongong event promises to be a dynamic and engaging platform, fostering connections and building bridges within the UOW community.
“UOW, in collaboration with the city and local organisations, is excited to embark on this journey of cultural exchange and learning with its international students.”
