New Sydney CBD Campus delivers high-quality education in the heart of the city
Former Chancellor Jillian Broadbent and business leader Diane Grady share insights on joining and excelling on corporate boards at launch event
The University of Wollongong (UOW) officially launched its new state-of-the-art Sydney CBD campus on Wednesday (13 November 2024). The new campus, home to Sydney Business School, UOW, overlooks Darling Harbour and offers students and staff a sophisticated learning environment in the heart of Sydney’s vibrant business and cultural scene.
UOW Sydney CBD was previously located in the Gateway Building in Circular Quay. Classes started at the new campus, in Tower 1 Darling Park, in August.
In his address, UOW Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor John Dewar AO shared his enthusiasm for the new Sydney CBD campus.
“This new location is a major step in our commitment to bringing high-quality education to the heart of Sydney. It is also a natural continuation of our growth, building on the proud reputation of UOW’s Sydney Business School, which has been a crucial part of UOW since 1997,” Professor Dewar said.
“Here in the heart of Sydney, we are now better positioned than ever to serve professionals seeking to expand their expertise, build excellence, and grow networks of influence, enabling them to lead with integrity and impact.
“Our programs are developed with rigour, led by research, and delivered with contemporary learning approaches, preparing our graduates to make responsible, forward-thinking decisions in today’s complex business landscape. As a proud signatory to the United Nations' Principles of Responsible Management Education, we’re committed to fostering a generation of leaders who carry a deep sense of responsibility.”
Following the official launch, attendees were invited to an exclusive fireside chat featuring two of Australia’s esteemed business leaders, former UOW Chancellor Jillian Broadbent AC and Diane Grady AO.
Hosted by Interim Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law Professor Grace McCarthy, the discussion delved into their insights on joining and excelling on corporate boards, touching on vital topics including skillsets, networking, board culture, and emerging trends in corporate governance.
Ms Broadbent is a respected Australian business leader with board experience across the Reserve Bank of Australia, Macquarie Bank, Qantas, the Sydney Theatre Company, and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. She shared her career journey and experiences and spoke on the essential skills and strategies required for aspiring board members to succeed in today’s complex governance landscape.
Ms Grady is a Director of Grant Thornton, Kelsian, and Tennis Australia, with a distinguished record as an independent Non-Executive Director across prominent organisations such as Macquarie Group, Woolworths, BlueScope Steel, and Lend Lease Ltd. She offered insights into the importance of networking and preparation for board roles, and shared perspectives on the challenges and culture of various boards.
Their discussion also covered future trends in corporate governance, providing attendees with actionable advice on how to stay ahead and make meaningful contributions as board members in an ever-evolving business environment.
