Professor Alfredo Paloyo awarded prestigious JMI Policy Challenge Grant to tackle early intervention in government policy

Project will maximise the impact of evidence-based insights on policy outcomes

Associate Professor Alfredo Paloyo from the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) Faculty of Business and Law has been awarded a prestigious grant from the James Martin Institute for Public Policy (JMI).

His project, titled ‘Integrating evidence on early intervention in government policy’, is one of nine groundbreaking initiatives supported by JMI this year, each designed to address some of Australia’s most complex policy challenges.

The JMI Policy Challenge Grants program aims to bridge the gap between academic research and government policy by empowering university researchers to generate innovative policy insights. Professor Paloyo’s project focuses on a pressing issue for policymakers today – how to effectively integrate credible evidence into the formulation of early intervention policies, particularly in health and education.

Professor Paloyo said collaborating with JMI and leveraging their extensive network will amplify the project’s findings.

“Policies rooted in robust evidence can greatly enhance societal outcomes, especially in sectors like health and education where early intervention has been proven to make a significant difference,” Professor Paloyo said.

“At a time when public budgets are stretched, ensuring that spending decisions are backed by strong data is essential for efficient resource allocation.”

Professor Paloyo’s project will actively engage with policymakers and key stakeholders, culminating in a JMI Policy Insights Paper. The stakeholder engagement will provide opportunities for policymakers to evaluate the findings, discuss practical applications, and explore how the recommendations can be implemented to address current policy challenges.

“Bridging the gap between academic research and policy implementation is critical. By involving stakeholders in the process from the beginning, we ensure that our recommendations are not just based on evidence but are also tailored to meet the real-world needs of government decision-makers.”

“The project also explores the potential of evidence-based policymaking to advance intergenerational equity. Early interventions, particularly in education and health, are seen as key to providing young people with equitable opportunities in life.

“By targeting disparities that persist across generations, the project has the potential to generate long-term social and economic benefits, reducing dependence on public assistance and improving overall societal well-being.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with the JMI team to ensure that our research influences both public discourse and policymaking, ultimately maximising the impact of our evidence-based insights on actual policy outcomes,” he said.

The Policy Challenge Grants are part of JMI’s efforts to support innovative research that can provide actionable solutions to some of the nation’s most critical challenges.
