Proposed system fairer, more sustainable says Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar

University of Wollongong (UOW) Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO has welcomed the Australian Government’s announcement that it will set limits on the number of international students that can be enrolled by higher education providers.

“UOW had previously called for greater certainty, clarity and transparency on Government measures to manage migration and this proposed new approach delivers that,” Professor Dewar said.

“We welcome Education Minister Jason Clare’s recognition that the current approach of managing student visa numbers by Ministerial Direction 107 is having a profound and unfair impact on regional universities like UOW.

“Its removal and replacement with the Government’s proposed system, is fairer and more sustainable than the current visa processing regime.

“We will continue to work closely with the Federal Government to navigate this period of unprecedented reform in higher education and help ensure that UOW continues to thrive in the communities it serves.”
