UOW academics provide expert commentary, opinion and analysis on a range of ongoing and breaking news stories

2024 US elections

Professor Markus Wagner can provide expert commentary on present and future legal battles over the US presidential elections. Professor Wagner says there are allegations over the integrity of the voting process and legal battles are already underway, with more expected. He believes this will spill over into political uncertainty. Professor Wagner is an internationally recognised expert in global economic law and governance, international peace and security, as well as US and Australian constitutional law. He is the Director of the Transnational Law and Policy Centre at the University of Wollongong.

Dr Daniel Fleming can talk about the latest developments in the US presidential election. Dr Fleming is a historian with expertise in the US civil rights movement, US history and politics, race, gender and class. His current research is focused on the influence of Martin Luther King Jr in Australia, and gun control and gun rights in the US. He is a lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry.

Interest rates

Associate Professor Martin O’Brien can discuss interest rates, ahead of tomorrow’s announcement by the Reserve Bank of Australia.  Associate Professor O’Brien is an economist and the Director of the Centre for Human and Social Capital Research. His research interests include segmented labour market theory, econometrics, older worker employment issues and hidden unemployment.

Strip searches

Professor Julia Quilter can discuss the impact of strip searches on young people. Professor Quilter says the damage done to a person through the process of a strip search far outweighs any benefit from the search in the first place. Professor Quilter is a criminal law and justice expert in the School of Law. Prior to entering academia Professor Quilter spent a decade practising criminal and public law as both a solicitor at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office and as a barrister at the NSW Solicitor General and Crown Advocate’s Chambers. 

New hemochromatosis registry

Honorary Professor Liz Milward is available to discuss the importance of a new Australian Hemochromatosis Registry. Professor Milward says the world-first registry will serve as a transformative resource in studying the condition and developing treatments. Hemochromatosis is a common genetic iron overload disorder that affects over 150,000 Australians. Professor Milward is a recognised authority in brain iron research and has been a driving force behind understanding the impact of hemochromatosis on brain health. She is an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health.
