Students from Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands celebrate graduation
Ceremony will acknowledge students from diverse backgrounds
The University of Wollongong’s (UOW) Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands campuses will come together on Thursday (30 January) to celebrate the remarkable achievements of 39 graduates during a ceremony at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.
Among the graduates is Donna Tonkin, a mature-age student and a mum whose journey to academic success has been nothing short of inspiring. After years of aspiring to pursue a degree, Donna enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing program at UOW Shoalhaven, which she has now completed with Distinction.
Her graduation comes just days after commencing the Doctor of Medicine program at the same campus, a significant milestone in her pathway to becoming a medical professional.
For Donna, the road to graduation was far from easy. While balancing the demands of study and family life, she suffered an unfortunate accident that left her with two broken legs.
Undeterred, Donna displayed resilience and strength, learning to walk again and adjusting her study schedule to ensure she completed her nursing degree on time.
"The journey to today has been a challenging but deeply rewarding experience,” Donna said.
“As a mature-age student, I wanted to show my children that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, no matter the obstacles. This milestone represents not just my achievement, but the support of my family and the incredible encouragement I received from the UOW community."
UOW Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Eileen McLaughlin congratulated the graduates for their outstanding achievements and giving back to the community.
"Graduation is a celebration of hard work, perseverance, and the courage to dream big,” Professor McLaughlin said.
“Donna’s story is an incredible example of the determination and grit that define our UOW students. Each graduate here today has faced their own unique challenges and emerged stronger, ready to make a positive impact in their communities."
The ceremony will bring together graduates and their families from diverse programs across UOW Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands campuses, highlighting the University’s commitment to providing accessible and high-quality education in regional areas.
"Regional campuses like UOW Shoalhaven play a vital role in transforming lives and communities through education," Professor McLaughlin said.
"We are immensely proud of what these graduates have achieved and look forward to seeing them thrive in their chosen fields.”
