Message to students - 11 May, 2022
Dear Students, I hope you’ve had a nice start to the week. I’m still beaming from the success of last week’s graduation ceremonies. The sea of blue gowns, smiling faces, proud family and friends, and of course, our graduates – our proudest achievements.
As I mentioned, the Sports Hub proved to be a wonderful venue and it felt great to be on our home court. You can view a time-lapse video here, showcasing the transformation of our Sports Hub into one of the most impressive and inspiring graduation venues I have seen. Also please take a moment to watch this powerful video that closed each of our ceremonies last week. It’s a wonderful representation of life at university and in particular graduation at UOW.
International Nurses Day
It’s International Nurses Day tomorrow and as a proud nurse myself, I just want to send a big shout out to all our nursing students and recent graduates. This is a time to celebrate our profession, and learn more about its long and important history. Here’s the essential guide to celebrating the nurses in our lives, who work so hard every day, but particularly in these last two and a half years.

Breaking away from your inner-critic
A lot of us use self-criticism as a way of motivating ourselves to do better next time. Research shows that doesn’t work. “When used excessively, [self-criticism] is consistently associated with less motivation, worse self-control, and greater procrastination. In fact, self-criticism shifts the brain into a state of inhibition, which prevents you from taking action to reach your goals.” In case you’ve been feeling a little self-critical lately, I thought I’d share this article which includes some great tips on how to break away from your inner-critic.
Health priorities
Finally, I know I sound like a broken record, but please book your vaccine for the flu and keep up with your Covid-19 vaccination schedule. Campus Pharmacy Wollongong now stocks the flu vaccine and all the COVID-19 vaccines in-store. Please book online or call 4288 1888.
I hope you enjoy the remaining lectures and classes for the week.
My best,
Trish
