Message to students

Dear students, Reconciliation Week continues around the nation until Friday. We have a wonderful Community Event being held today Wednesday 10am – 12pm at the McKinnon Lawn on the Wollongong Campus.

It will feature speakers, dances from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, a BBQ, bush tucker, a weaving session, and an Aboriginal tools and weaponry display. Everyone is welcome – you can register here.

Reconciliation Week. Be Brave. Make Change.

Wiradjuri woman and Manager for Indigenous Advancement at UOW, Tammy Small says “We must remember as a collective that reconciliation is everybody’s business. We need to move beyond the ‘when in doubt, leave it out’ way of thinking and work towards developing the tools necessary to foster fairer and more truthful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” Please take this message with you beyond this week.

International borders are open, so you can now study overseas!
Global research confirms that learning abroad is one of the most important experiences an undergraduate student can do. According to the International Education Association of Australia, ‘Learning abroad not only fosters globally engaged citizens and leaders, but also connects young Australians to global democracy and foreign policy initiatives. Learning abroad positively impacts students’ experience of, and engagement with, higher education and improves their employability and graduate outcomes.’ Sounds like a win/win! After many students missed out on these opportunities in recent years, I really wanted to make sure that those of you who are able, take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and the skills and experience offer. With a few funding grants available and so many countries across the world to visit, I’d highly recommend anyone who is interested apply.

Free flu vaccines for all NSW residents
The NSW Government announced they’ll be offering free flu shots for all NSW Residents from June 1st until June 30th this year. This initiative will hopefully prevent our hospitals from becoming overwhelmed during this already busy time. Our Campus Pharmacy, your local chemist or GP should be able to provide these. Please take advantage of this offer and keep safe this winter.

Moonlit Markets at UOW’s Wollongong campus
UOW Pulse are bringing back the Moonlit Markets, happening tonight 5 – 9pm in the UniBar Courtyard. Enjoy a night under the stars eating delicious food and listening to some local musical acts. The team have booked in some of Wollongong's best food trucks, including Two Smoking Barrels, Amigo's, Klarie's Kitchen, Your Dessert Station, Get Cookied Vegan Cookies and some live music from acoustic musician Mark Crotti.

Exam resources
Finally, exams are almost here. Staff across the university have worked hard to compile a fantastic list of resources on the webpage. With tips on best practice studying, online exam prep, and activities designed to relieve stress (including free haircuts and manicures!), this is your one-stop-exam-prep-shop, hopefully getting you to a place of calm and confidence by the time exams come around. Sending you my best wishes in the lead up.

Have a great rest of the week.

My best,
Trish
