Student spotlight: Saraswati Sharma
Meet Saru, a driven and dynamic student pursuing her second degree, Master of Business Analytics at Sydney Business School, UOW. Saru has over 12 years of management experience in international education sector as an Education Consultant. Having recently completed Master of Business Administration (MBA), she is now diving into the analytical side of business with enthusiasm and a clear vision for her future.
A Journey from Nepal to UOW
Saru’s strong pursuit for education is reflective in her own academic path. Saru also pursued a Master’s in Humanities and Social Sciences back in her home country Nepal. In her career as an education consultant, she guided many students through their study-abroad journeys. However, COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point for her. As the world shifted online, Saru saw the crucial role technology and data play in shaping effective business strategies. This realisation sparked her decision to pursue both an MBA and a Master of Business Analytics at UOW.
Facing challenges and growing through them
Like other students, Saru encountered several challenges. Learning platforms like Moodle and the teaching methods of both workshops and tutorials were all new for her in the beginning. Determined to overcome these hurdles, Saru made a concerted effort to immerse herself in campus life, attending classes and student events regularly. She actively sought out support, asking questions and engaging with both students and staff. With a smile, she says, “Gradually, I built my confidence, became familiar with the process, and made friends along the way. This support has been incredibly helpful in my journey.” This proactive approach helped her build a supportive network that has been invaluable throughout her academic journey.
Extracurricular impact and personal growth
Saru’s journey of personal growth has been enriched by both academic and extracurricular experiences. She shares that regularly seeking feedback from her professors allowed her to deepen her understanding of course material and enhance her performance.
Outside the classroom, Saru finds joy in exploring Sydney’s scenic beauty, going on hikes, and meeting new people. These activities not only give her a refreshing break from her studies but also help with her communication skills. She claims, "engaging in conversations with diverse individuals and embracing new experiences has significantly contributed to my personal development.”
Sharing lived experiences with confidence
“One of the achievements I am most proud of is having the opportunity to study in Australia. This experience has allowed me to learn and grow in ways I hadn't imagined, particularly through my studies.” The knowledge she’s gained has deepened her understanding of how various sectors of business require tailored practices to thrive, and how she can contribute to enhancing organisational culture and behaviour.
These experiences have allowed her to cultivate a more empathetic and self-aware leadership style. She shares with confidence, “I now actively apply the listening skills I’ve learned, striving to be more empathetic with my stakeholders and colleagues.” Saru also engages in regular self-reflection, which has enhanced her ability to make thoughtful and informed decisions. These insights have shaped her leadership approach, making her more adaptable, empathetic, and dedicated to fostering a positive work environment.
Balancing studies and work
When asked how she maintains her motivation throughout studies and work, Saru says she regularly does yoga, meditation, and stretching exercises into her routine to maintain mental and physical balance. Additionally, spending quality time with friends provides her with a much-needed respite from academic pressures. These practices help Saru stay organised and productive, allowing her to manage her time effectively and remain engaged in her studies.
Career aspirations
Looking ahead, Saru aspires to build a career in management consulting. Her dual degrees in MBA and Master of Business Analytics will provide her with the analytical tools and strategic insights necessary to help organizations make data-driven decisions. She also aims to bridge the gap between education providers and students, ensuring that educational programs are aligned with future career opportunities.
