Message to students - 11 March 2024
Dear Students, I hope you are settling into life at UOW and that you’ve been taking advantage of the many activities held on our campuses.
Autumn is the best season here, as the weather is still warm, and our lawns and benches are full of people listening to live music, doing yoga, reading, chatting and forming lasting connections.
Remember to check the MyUOW app, student email and Pulse: what's on website for information on workshops, events and networking opportunities—there’s always something fun happening.
Happy International Women’s Day – watch my chat with Ella
To the women of UOW, I wish you strength and happiness for International Women’s Day, which was marked on Friday. Michelle Obama once said, “No one told me I could do it.” I want to remind all of you who identify as women that I wholeheartedly believe you can achieve anything you want.
To mark this special day, I sat down with Ella Young, UOW’s Women’s Representative on the Student Advisory Council (SAC) and a Vice-Chancellor Leadership Scholar. We discussed some top tips for women starting their careers. Watch the International Women's Day video.
New horizons for careers & employability
University is a wonderful journey, but it’s just the beginning. As you start to pursue your dream career, remember that the world of work is changing rapidly, especially with AI advancements.
To stay on top of all things career-related, register for the Graduate Careers Expo 2024 on Tuesday March 19. You will have a chance to network with your future employers, get sound career advice, and even have your professional headshots taken.
UOW’s inclusive and respectful community
March is a big month for inclusivity and respect, with important days such as 1 March (Zero Discrimination Day and International Wheelchair Day), Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade (2 March), Harmony Week (20-26 March, with Harmony Day celebrations on 21 March), as well as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March) and Transgender Day of Visibility (31 March).
I am very proud of the inclusive and welcoming community we’re co-creating here at UOW, where staff and students from all backgrounds, identities and perspectives feel safe, respected and supported.
However, if you ever witness or experience violence, abuse, racism or harassment of any kind, I encourage you to report it and seek support. Please take a quick read of the updated Anti-Racism and Cultural Safety Policy. See all the information on resources and various support safety options. Remember that at UOW, you’re never alone with your problems.
Amidst global political turbulence, I invite you all to embrace diverse viewpoints and cultural differences as strengths that enrich our community. Let’s engage in open and respectful dialogue while navigating these times with understanding and unity.
I wish you all the best for this busy part of your Autumn session at UOW.
Best wishes
Trish
