UOW Students Dive into Culture and Business in India and Singapore

January 2024 was an exciting month for a group of Business and Law undergraduates students, who embarked on a two-week study tour to Kochi, India, and Singapore. This trip, supported by DFAT’s New Colombo Plan (NCP), offered an immersive blend of academic sessions, industry visits, cultural experiences, and tasty food adventures.

The journey began in Kochi, where the students dove headfirst into the local culture. They explored historical sites and tea plantations, attended traditional dance performances, had a yoga lesson, and sampled the rich and diverse cuisine of Kerala. Bayley, a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Economics and Finance student said "The Indian hospitality and culture were incredible. The colours, the food, the music, and the friendliness of the people made it an unforgettable experience."

The academic component hosted by UOW’s partner institutions, Rajagiri Business School, in Kochi, included sessions with local students, fostering an exchange of ideas and perspectives as well as the opportunity to present at an international conference on “Multidisciplinary Approaches to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals’”. The group also visited Tata Consulting Services, gaining insights into the operations of one of India's largest multinational companies.

After a week in Kochi, the group boarded a flight to Singapore, where a new set of cultural and industry experiences awaited. Industry visits in Singapore included a stop at Zuellig Pharma, where students learned about the company's sustainability challenges and efforts. "It was refreshing to hear that sustainability is a priority for such a major player in the pharmaceutical world - it was interesting to see their genuine commitment to greener supply chain processes," Carlo, a Bachelor of Laws student, shared. The group also met with the Australian High Commission and Western Digital, gaining insights into the importance of Australia's relationships in the Asia-Pacific region.

Holly, a Bachelor of Accounting student, would recommend an international experience saying: "If you're considering an overseas study experience, do it! The friends you'll make and the new cultures you'll experience are well worth it."

This two-week study tour to Kochi and Singapore, part of subject BUS303 and led by Associate Professor Matt Pepper and Erin Snape, is just one of the many international opportunities available to UOW students.
