Meet Sydney Business School, UOW student, Ahmed Farhan
Student Spotlight: Ahmed Farhan
Meet Ahmed, a dedicated student from UAE currently pursuing a dual Master’s degree in Supp.ly Chain and Project Management at the University of Wollongong (UOW) Sydney CBD Campus.
From Dubai to Sydney: Ahmed Farhan’s journey of growth and discovery
Ahmed Farhan always knew he wanted to explore the world. Hailing from Dubai, he had completed his Bachelor's in Business Administration with a specialisation in Supply Chain and gained valuable experience as an intern at Emirates Airlines. But he wasn’t ready to stop there. Determined to broaden his horizons, he set his sights on Australia and embarked on an academic adventure at Sydney Business School, University of Wollongong, where he is currently pursuing a dual Master’s degree in Supply Chain and Project Management.
Choosing UOW: A decision of opportunity and growth
For Ahmed, UOW was the perfect choice. Having already established a strong reputation in Dubai, the university felt familiar yet offered a completely new experience. What truly sealed the deal was the opportunity to complete a dual master’s degree in just two years. “It’s an accelerated pathway that allows me to gain expertise in both supply chain and project management efficiently,” he shares.
Balancing studies, social life, and personal interests
Life at UOW isn’t just about academics for Ahmed. The well-structured course schedule gives him the flexibility to enjoy his personal interests while staying on top of his studies. “Time management is key,” he explains. “By planning effectively, I can keep up with coursework while also exploring Sydney, meeting new people, and pursuing hobbies.” Whether it’s discovering the city's vibrant culture or simply relaxing with friends, he appreciates the balance that university life offers.
Overcoming challenges: A journey to independence
Moving to a new country wasn’t without its challenges. Adjusting to a different lifestyle, academic system, and social environment initially felt overwhelming. “The first few months were tough,” Ahmed admits. “I was navigating everything at once—new surroundings, a different study pattern, and an unfamiliar way of life.” However, with the help of UOW’s support services, including academic resources and student engagement programs, he soon found his footing.
Comparing life in Dubai and Sydney
Having spent his entire life in Dubai, moving to Sydney was a major transition. “Back home, everything was familiar—I had my family, friends, and a strong support system,” he reflects. “Here, I had to become more independent, managing my finances, academics, and daily life on my own.”
While he misses the comforts of home, Ahmed sees this experience as an invaluable opportunity for self-growth. “Being in a different country has taught me life skills I wouldn’t have developed otherwise. It’s an eye-opening journey that’s preparing me for the future.”
Making the most of university resources
Ahmed credits much of his smooth transition to the university’s support system. From Peer Learning Coaches and well-being workshops to the Careers and Employability service, UOW offers a range of resources that have helped him navigate his academic journey. “The careers service has been particularly beneficial. From resume building to interview prep, it’s been instrumental in preparing me for job opportunities.”
Looking ahead: Career aspirations in the aviation supply chain sector
After graduation, Ahmed plans to explore opportunities in the aviation supply chain sector, with a keen interest in what Australia has to offer. “I want to gain hands-on experience here, expand my network, and develop skills that will open doors both locally and internationally.” While he remains open to future prospects in the UAE, for now, he is focused on making the most of his time in Australia.
Advice for fellow international students
To those embarking on their own international study journey, Ahmed offers some heartfelt advice: “Never hesitate to reach out for support. There are so many resources available, and fellow students are always willing to help. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed at times, but remember—you’re not alone.”
His key takeaway? Embrace every moment. “This experience is about growth, both academically and personally. Stay open to new opportunities, manage your time well, and enjoy the journey. You’ll come out stronger and more prepared for the future.”
