Research Internships

What is a research internship?

A research internship is an opportunity for enrolled HDR Candidates to undertake a short research project (usually three months full-time) in collaboration with an industry partner and typically at their premises.

  • HDR interns often receive a stipend to cover living expenses and by undertaking the internship, they build important relationships with an industry organisation, showcase their talent and expand their knowledge and expertise.
  • For industry partners, internships are an incredibly cost-effective opportunity to identify future workforce talent and undertake research projects.

Research internships are generally undertaken on-site with industry partners, giving candidates a genuine opportunity to immerse themselves in real world applications of their research area.

With assistance from the Graduate Research School  and their UOW mentor, interested HDR candidates will be introduced to industry partners, assisted to find appropriate projects and guided through the process of undertaking an internship.

Experienced staff at the industry partner will oversee delivery of the internship project and the University coordinates the legal and financial aspects.

The Australian Government views research internships as a critical contributor to the future knowledge economy of Australia.

Find a research internship project

There are several ways to find research internship projects. Some projects are already established and just waiting for the right person. Alternatively, UOW HDR supervisors may have industry relationships that can be leveraged to craft a research internship project tailored to your skills, interests and research area.
