The purpose of the scheme is to foster international collaboration by enabling PhD students to spend time at Surrey and Wollongong, with supervisors from both institutions.
Leukemia encompasses multiple types of blood cancers with widely ranging survival outcomes. Arsenic trioxide treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia has improved survival rates from 3 months to more than 5 years for more than 80% of patients. To extend this therapeutic capability to other forms of leukemia, we have improved targeting specificity by attaching targeting molecules to arsenic, facilitating trojan like drug uptake into the leukaemia cells. The UOW/UoS team will probe the mechanisms of action of these new compounds through joint multidisplinary studies and inform lead optimisation. The expected outcomes are to discover potent and selective arsenic complexes as novel therapeutics for leukaemia. PhD student will be trained in medicinal chemistry, molecular modelling and cancer biology and will have opportunties to collaborate with industry. This project is suited for students with a passion for chemistry and biology.
